Indonesia is perhaps one of the richest countries in the world in natural product resources, particularly in botanical resources. Indonesian people have been using medicinal plants as traditional medicines for long time, although most of them have not yet been verified on the basis of modern science.Our research project entitled "Study on Naturally Occurring Drug Materials in Indonesia-4" aims at revealing the naturally occurring drug materials, i.e. medicinal plants, in Indonesia and anticipates the development of the academic exchange between Japan and Indonesia.In 1992 expedition, we first collected the information about Maluku spices in the market of Maluku Province. Next, we visited Central Sulawesi Province and collected information about 200 kinds of traditionally used medicinal plants from the local people and collected 23 kinds of medicinal plants for chemical investigations.In 1993, all the plants collected by us were botanically identified at Herbarium Bogoriense, Bogor, Indonesia. Furthermore, the alcoholic extracts of these specimens were subjected to several chromatographic analyses at Osaka University to isolate the chemical constituents for examination of their biological activities. Those analytical studies are in progress. We have so far obtained some promising evidence, which suggests that the chemical and biological studies of those materials collected in our survey may lead us to find new substances of pharmacological importance.The collaboration with the Research and Development Center for Biology-LIPI, Indonesia, the Indonesian participating organization, will certainly be continued in this manner hereafter.
