This project attempts to investigate interrelationship between international trade and international security. The investigators found the need for developing the basic framework of analysis as there are a few theoretical works in this area.They first developed is a model is which the national security expenditures are compared with the cost of protecting inefficient domestic industries. The reason is that as the defense expenditures would possibly reduce the risk of trade disruption and therefore, the need for protection of inefficient industries would be lessened as the security expenditures are increased. Thus the traditional defense argument for protection must be modified.The second model compares costs of protecting domestic industries, the costs of stockpiling material in order to meet the period of possible trade disruptions and the cost of security as the way of reducing possibility of trade disruptions.Thirdly, the project produced a general equilibrium model of two nations security expenditures as a function of availability of arms supply from the rest of the world.Fourth, it investigate coordinating national defense projects in a two country trade model.Fifth, it compares the effects of human resource development in armed forces in the U. S. and Japan.Sixth, it contains a theoretical analysis of food security arguments for protecting agricultural industries.These are samples of the models developed through this project.
