Aiming at doing research on various aspects of rural industrialization in China since its economic reform in the early 1980's, our joint project started in 1989 with a partnership of the Development Institute under the Rural Development Center of the State Council, but as a wellーknown result of the political struggles which happened in Peking in that spring, it had to be ceased and postponed, primarily because our Chinese partners as well as the Institute itself were placed under strict control during the political campaignes in the aftermath of the Tiananmen square incident.The project made a new start in 1990, then with reshuffled research partners from the Rural Development Institute under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
