本邦における南方系漁船の系譜に関する実証的研究をおこなうために鹿児島県の喜界島、和歌山県の新宮市等のフイルドワ-クをおこなった。これらの調査は昨年度の調査し沖縄県糸満市及び石垣島)の継続的なものであり、本研究の研究課題の性格上、フイルドワ-クによる調査、研究を重視した結果である。本邦各地における小型木造漁船の建造がプラスチック(FRP)化されていく中で、今回は、この最後の機会をとらえ、消滅していく漁船の南方的技術的系譜、消長および、この種の伝統文化の記録を正確に記載できたことは最大の収穫であった。また、これらの資料をもとに実証的な研究が実施できた。その結果、南方系漁船の系譜には黒潮の流れにそって共通するものもあるが、地域的に独自の発達をとげたものもあることがわかった。沖縄方面で使用されてきた刳舟(サバニ)に代表されるものは、それなりの伝統的な発達段階をふんで今日の「ハギ舟」形態のものに発展してきたし、他方では小型木造漁船が舟木舟から発達、分化(進化)したとしても、かなりはやい時期に「ハギ舟」としての系譜をたどってきた形態のものがみうけられた。さらに、今後残された課題は、対馬海流域における調査、研究の実施はもとより、伊豆八丈島や伊豆大島等で使用されてきた、所謂「カヌ-」(アウトリガ-)は小笠原諸島の別系統の南方的漁船の系譜的要素があり、これらの関係はマリアナ諸島との関連で注目していく必要があることが明確になった。
