项目摘要

本研究の目的は、「研究目的・研究実施計画」に記したように、日本の中世における王朝や幕府と天台・真言宗といった旧仏教との相依関係の実態を具体的に検討し、政治と仏教の関係、当時の表現を用いれば「王法」と「仏法」との関係を構造的に解明することにあった。本年度は、とくに南北朝期における公武の祈祷的世界に注目した。後七日御修法や五壇法などの主要な修法が誰によってどのように行われ、またどのように変化していったかをまず調べた。その結果、五壇法の主催権の公家から武家への移行、換言すれば室町幕府による同法主催権の剥奪を可能にしたのは、将軍の身辺に編成された武家護持僧であったことなどが明らかになった。続いて、同時期の代表的な護持僧たる醍醐寺三宝院の賢俊について掘り下げることによって、その祈祷僧としての性格と役割とを明らかにした。賢俊は天皇、将軍双方の護持僧を兼任したが、次第に武家方に重点がかかってきたこと、賢俊に対する将軍足利尊氏の絶大な信頼、帰依、経済的援助と賢俊自身の将軍護持僧としての自覚は相互に作用して、賢俊の心に驚くべき忠誠心を芽生えさせたこと、真言密教の最高ポストに位置する賢俊の、将軍護持僧としての活動は幕府支配のための強力な精神的支柱となったであろうことなどのことがらを史料を踏まえて具体的に指摘した。
