本研究の目的は、古代日本において金めっき技法を用いる製品の国産化が開始された時期、考古学でいう古墳時代の新しい生産技術とその製品の実態を明らかにすることであった。そこで上総金鈴塚古墳出土の金銅製品を主たる研究対象とし、X線透視装置等の分析機器をも併用して製品と製作技術の詳細な観察および実測図・写真の作成を行い、以下の成果を得た。1.大刀 金鈴塚古墳出土の金銅装および銀装の大刀について検討を加えた結果、従来の発掘調査報告書と出土品修理報告書で認識されていた復元形態に誤りのあることが明らかとなった。また、環頭大刀の環頭の固定に多種の技法があったことを認めその相異が今後の大刀の編年研究の基準となり得ること、大刀外装具の製作に今まで解明されていなかった技法を認め他の類品を再検討する必要が生じることになったこと、大刀の鞘口構造に2種あることが判明し合口か呑口か問題となっていた課題に新しい知見を提起することになったこと、など多くの新事実を確認した。2.馬具 金鈴塚古墳出土の金銅装馬具については、鉄地に金銅板を固定する鋲留技法の相異によって3種の馬具の組合わせが識別できることとなり、また、付属品の1種に関する学界の従来の認識が誤っていることも判明した。今後、金銅製品の金属元素組成分析値を他の類品のそれと比較検討した結果をも合わせた研究成果を公表することによって、上総金鈴塚古墳出土品は従来に増して古墳時代編年研究の重要資料としての価値が大きくなる。ただし、研究成果の詳細な公表には大量の頁数の報告書を必要とするので3年後に別の刊行物を予定している。
