精神発達遅滞児の聴力測定法については、従来適切な方法がないとされており、ほとんどの場合に「測定不能」として処理をされてしまっていた。こうしたことは教育対象児の適切な状況把握をそこなっており、教育を進めていく際の大きな支障になっていた。こうした現状を打開し、精神発達遅滞児の聴力特性を把握することによって指導の方法の充実を計った。本研究においては精神薄弱養護学校における聴力検査方法の検討とその検査結果に基づき、精神発達遅滞児の聴力特性の解明と、特性をいかした指導方法の立案を進めた。一般的に用いられている聴力検者が被検査の反応に依存する自覚的な検査であるため、精神発達に遅滞がみられる場合や情緒面の安定にかける場合等の障害を持つ子供に対しては適応が困難とされ、検査不能として処置されてきた。しかし、こうした場合に適応できる聴力検査法の検討は、まだ殆ど為されていないのが現状である。これは教育対象児の適切かつ十分な状況把握をそこねており、教育計画をたて指導を進めていく際に主要な情報の欠落となり、指導の効果に大きな支障となっていた。本研究においては条件詮索反応検査(COR)を用いて精神薄弱児の聴力検査方法の検討を行った。検査は各対象児について一定の間隔をおいて2回実施した。また、ふりむきや眼球の動き、行動停止、発声などが反応指標として有効であった。さらに聴性行動反応検査(BOR)および新生児聴力検査用のネオメータによる驚愕反応検査をも一部くわえてより、信頼性及び妥当性を高めた。その結果養護学校児童・生徒の約95%について検査が可能であり、各自についてオーディオグラムを作成することができた。また、本研究でみる限り21dB以上の聴力レベルを示したものは約26%であり、教育指導プログラム立案上の有力な資料となった。
