従来本格的に取り上げられることがなかった近世村落文化について、群馬県赤城山南西麓の村落、特に原之郷村(現富士見村原乃郷)のフィ-ルドワ-クを通して実証的に究明してきた。まず、村落のおかれた政治的・経済的条件としての村落の構造的分析を行った。山麓の村落のもつ畑地優位の耕地状況、常に用水不足と高い米年貢に悩まされる田方、石高制の一般的理解からすれば、後進性のイメ-ジはぬぐいされない。しかし、この畑方優位、劣悪水田の耕地状況が村落の様相を変え、文化創造の母体となったのである。養蚕、生糸業の村落への普及と定着は、文字文化を不可欠なものとした。市場経済の投機性、養蚕の科学は、人々に読み書き算用を生活する上で是非習得すべきものとした。19世紀のはじめ、こうした人々の要求を背景に村落内に手習塾が誕生した。師匠は村落内の識字層の文人、筆子は階層、身分を越えて広汎に分布した。そこでは実学ともいうべきイロハ、名頭(人名)、村名、国尽を基本に証文・手紙の書き方が教えられた。また、その上に五人組条目、商売往来、千字文が学ばれていった。もちろん、更に文人を志すものには、俳諧、国学、漢字の素養も、師を求めて獲得されたのである。本研究はこれらを、原乃郷村の船津伝次平家の親子二代の手習塾と彼ら師上小出村(現前橋市)の百姓文人藍沢無満の文化結社「蓼園社〕を個別に実証研究することによって明らかにすることができたのである。今後は、原乃郷だけでなく、在郷町において事例、また異なる立地条件をもつ村落において、つづけてきた分析手法を使って、個別実証研究を試みていきたいと思う。
