(1)(i)国立国語研究所蔵の九州及びその隣接地方言関係資料(各県地方調査員の報告書等)や、九州各県の地方教育委員会所蔵資料その他を、可能な限り調査し、従来における九州方言研究の実態を究明した。(ii)九州諸方言の中、肥前・肥後・筑前筑後・豊前豊後・薩摩・大陽・日向それぞれに関し、各地5地点ずつ、計35地点の方言を臨地調査した。アクセント・言語・文法諸現象中心。(iii)国会図書館所蔵の本草書など、近世期の九州方言文献を調査した。(iv)上記(i)〜(iii)の調査結果をカードに整理した。(v)上記の結果から九州諸方言相互の系譜関係や、新古関係を考察した。(2)その研究成果については、『九州方言の史的研究』(1989年3月刊)で記述するが、重要な発見としては、次の如きが挙げられる。(i)九州諸方言のうち、薩隅方言は、比較的古い語彙が多く存するが、アクセント・言語・文法等の面では、むしろ豊前豊後方言の古形が注目される。(ii)アクセントについては、豊前豊後方言が最も古く、日向大部分や大隅東部・肥後東部・肥前北部・筑後諸方言が最も新しいと考えられる。その他の諸現象も、アクセントに準ずる場合が多い。(iii)従来の「豊日方言」は、日向方言と両豊方言に分けるべきであり、両豊方言のうち日向方言に入れるべきである。(iv)従来の「肥筑方言」は、両肥方言及び筑後方言と筑前方言及び壱岐・対馬方言に分けるべきである。(v)『庶物類纂はじめ数種の本草書・農書類が、動植物名等の九州方言史料として貴重なものである事を明らかにした。
