本総合研究の目的は、気候システム研究センタ-設立を目指して、日本のアカデミック・コミュニティ-における気候モデリングの構想を練り、中期的研究計画や研究体制について検討することである。このため全国関連研究者の会合を開いた。1. 関連研究機関代表者およびマナベ博士との連絡・検討会:平成2年6月21日。アメリカ海洋大気庁地球流展研究所主任研究員で、気候モデリングの世界最高権威であるマナベ博士が来日された機会に、気候システム研究センタ-の設立準備に関わっている研究者が集まって研究計画案を発表し、同博士からアドバイスを受けた。同時に、気候モデリングを実行中の気象庁、気象研究所および気候モデリングをこれから始めようとしている国立環境研、公害資源研、防災科学技術研の関係者にも参加してもらって、それぞれの研究機関での気候モデル研究についてどのような特色をもたせ、相互に協力して日本全体として効率よく研究を進めるにはどうすればよいのかについて討論した。その結果各研究機関の特色について了解が得られた。2. 各大学関連研究者による気候研究体制検討会:平成3年2月8、9日。気候システム研究センタ-設立が平成3年度予算政府原案で認められたので、東北大・東大・名大・京大・九大の関連研究者が集まって、新センタ-における研究体制について検討し、原案を作成した。これは、今後、全国共同利用施設として運営して行くための基礎となるものである。また、気候モデリングのセンタ-が設立されるので、それと相補的な気候の観測的研究の体制及び両者間の交流・協力体制についても検討した。
