本総合研究は遺伝子組換え体微生物の開放系利用にともなう安全性評価に関連して、その学問的裏付けを強化すると同時に、この問題の基礎としての生態学と分子遺伝学の両分野を融合させた、新しい学問分野の定着と進展のための重点領域研究の基礎作りをすることを目標とした。1.共同研究:つぎのような研究内容について、それぞれ共同研究をおこない、また将来の重点領域研究を目指して、総括班を中心に5回にわたる討論をおこなった。(1)野外における組換え体生物およびその遺伝子の検出、(2)野外における組換え体遺伝子の移動、(3)生物間相互作用系における組換え体の挙動と形質変化、(4)土壌における組換え体の生態ー研究手法の開発と現象解析ー、(5)水界生態系における組換え体の生態ー研究手法の開発と現象解析ー、(6)開放系における遺伝子組換え体の生態(総括班)2.研究集会:平成2年5月31日ー6月1日に、東京大学海洋研究所において“遺伝子操作生物の天然への放出"のテ-マのもとにシンポジウムを行った。2日間にわたるシンポジウムでは、延べ200人の参加者を数え、18人の発表者の報告と問題提起にたいして、活発な討論が展開された。このシンポジウムの成果は、雑誌「海洋」1991年、1、2月号として刊行された。上記のような準備研究、特に各班、総括班の共同研究の中から、将来の重点領域研究では、単に組換え体微生物のみを研究対象とするのではなく、自然界における微生物生態秩序を遺伝子のレベルで解明するため、より包括的で基礎的な研究領域を創造すべきであるという意見の一致を見た。これに基づいて総括班を中心として重点領域「遺伝子レベルでみた微生物の生態秩序」研究計画案が作成され、さらに各研究分担者、およびこの領域に関連する研究者の意見を求めるとともに、研究代表者、分担者の全体集会を開き最終的な成案を得た。
