明治後期には小学校卒業者が増大し、長野県埴科郡旧五加小学校卒業者の進学先は小学校高等科、実業補習学校、埴科農蛋学校(乙種実業学校)、埴科実科高等女学校、県立屋代中学校と拡大した。しかし1910年代には小学校高等科、実業補習学校、埴科農蛋学校の3校の修業年限、教育課程、内容などは重なっていた。そのため1920年代にはこれらの学校の再編案が何種類も関係町村の間で検討され、各学校では教育課程の改正、学校の廃止などがあった。これ事実のもつ意味の解明が本研究の課題であった。まず、各学校の設置、課程変更の経緯について、五加村役場文書、長野県庁文書、国立公文書館文書の調査をおこない詳細を明らかにした。また上記の学校の多くは県立高校として現在も残っており、農業高校、普通科進学校などとなっている。これら各学校文書の調査をおこなって五加小学校出身者を確認するとともに、五加村役場文書中の各保護者家庭の所得関係文書と対照して、各校への進学者の家庭階層の変化を明らかにした。このようにして1920年代から30年代にかけて小学校卒業者の進学の増大のなかで、初等後教育の諸機関、中等諸学校などそれぞれの学校の教育課程が変化し、各学校固有の意味が明解になり、各学校の役割分担がはっきりしていく過程を明らかにした。またとりわけこの研究においては、進学した児童の家庭階層の変化の分析に特徴がある。この点についていえば、進学者の家庭階層の広がりは明らかに認められたが、中等諸学校間の役割分担については成績や本人の好みなどもあると考えられ、家庭の経済的な条件からは明確には区分できないことが確認された。
