In order to evaluate and to develop infrared hollow waveguides for power delivery as well as sensor applications, the joint research has been made between the research groups of Professor Harrington of Rutgers University and M. Miyagi of Tohoku University. The results made are as follows :1. Loss reduction of dielectric-coated metallic waveguides As a coating inner dielectric, we have employed ZnS which id durable and nontoxic and fabricated ZnS-coated Ag waveguides with very small losses. The waveguides have been also designed so as to transmit CO and Er : YAG laser light. The roughness of inner surface is found to be a very important factor to realize extremely small losses and good beam quality. Therefore, we have employed a glass tube as a mandrel.2. Mounting technique of dielectric-coated metallic waveguides In order to transmit KW-order carbon dioxide laser light, a cooling system for the waveguides are designed and 3 KW laser light was transmitted through a 4m long waveguide for the first time.3. Study on sapphire hollow waveguide As a total internal reflection-type waveguide, sapphire hollow waveguides with small core diameter have been fabricated by the EFG method. It id found that the inner surface roughness causes significantly loss increase than theoretically expected.4. Application of hollow waveguides The dielectric-coated metallic and sapphire hollow waveguides have been successively applied to infrared radiometry and gas detection.5. Holding of international symposium The international symposium was held by Professors A. Katzir, J. A. Harrington, and myself in Boston, from September 5 to 6 in 1992 supported by SPIE.
