The purpose of this project is to realize highly efficient and intelligent delivery system for the infrared light with high energy or high power. Main results of this project are as follows :1. International conference to promote biomedical optics4 international meetings were held with collaborators in this project in BiOS Europe '97, BiOS '98, BiOS Europe '98 and BiOS '99 fibers. The continuous progress in the area of infrared delivery system in the biophotonics have been made.2. Measurements of optical constants of polymers in the infraredA method of simultaneous measurements of the refractive index and extinctioncoefficient of thin polymer has been developed in the visible, near-infrared, and infrared wavelength regions. Based on this method, optical characteristics of many engineering plastics have been clarified.3. Loss reduction of polymer-coated hollow waveguidesIt is firstly clarified that the solvent of polymer, concentration of polymer solution, and the coating speed are the key factors to reduce the waveguide losses. 2 m-long waveguides with inner diameters of 0.54-1.0 mm have been successfully fabricated.4. Fabrication of lensed taper couplerLnsed taper couplers have been proposed and fabricated to increase the alignment tolerance and loss reduction of them has been made.5. Fabrication of hollow waveguides transmitting multiple infrared lightBy choosing the thickness of polymer layer to be coated inside hollow silver tube, multiple infared light as well as aiming light of red or green color has beensuccessfully transmitted with small losses.6. Sealing of hollow waveguidesA simple technique has been proposed to seal the ends of hollow waveguides. It is clarified that there exits an optimum thickness of sealing film to maximize the power capability of hollow waveguides without any damage of the sealing.
