東京大学の理学系の学部・研究所について基盤的研究設備の調査を行った。即ち、医学部、工学部、理学部、農学部、薬学部、教養学部の全学科の講座、および医科学研究所、地震研究所、生産技術研究所、応用微生物研究所、宇宙線研究所、原子核研究所、物性研究所、海洋研究所、先端科学技術研究センタ-、および総合研究資料館の全研究部門の研究者に対して、それぞれの研究分野において基盤的設備と考えられる設備につきアンケ-ト調査を行った。アンケ-トの内容は、設備の名称、性能、使用目的、必要数量、使用人数、価格、耐用年数、共同利用の可否および範囲、東大における充足度等である。上記の部局から総計約2500の回答があり、それらの回答を整理・検討した。まず各部局毎に設備を整理した。上記の部局の研究分野は重複しているので、次に研究分野毎に設備を整理した。研究分野は科学研究費補助金系・部・分科・細目表の分類に従った。これらの分野毎に、設備を(1)真に基盤的な設備(要求件数の多い、各分野の研究において基本的デ-タを出す、使用範囲の広い設備)、(2)先端的な研究に必要な設備(先端的研究に必要であるばかりでなく、研究者からのフィ-ドバックにより改良される設備)、(3)巨大設備(加速器や観測船など)、(4)特定部局において要求の強い先端的な設備、(5)その他(要求も少なく、順位も低い設備、用途が不明瞭な設備等)の5種類に分類した。(1)の設備は約300ある(分野毎の重複あり)が、その中で要求度の高いものは、理学分野では、核磁気共鳴装置、レ-ザ-、X線回折装置、質量分析機、電子顕微鏡等、工学の分野でも、X線回折装置、核磁気共鳴装置、レ-ザ-が高く、その他に、風洞、赤外分光光度計、ガスクロマトグラフ質量分析機等、農学では、アミノ酸シ-クエンサ-、DNAシ-クエンサ-、高速液体クロマトグラフ、超遠心機等、医学では、超遠心機、DNAシ-クエンサ-、高速液体クロマトグラフ、核磁気共鳴装置、電子顕微鏡等であった。いづれの分野にも共通して要求度の高いものとして、コンピュ-タ-、ワ-クステ-ション、画像処理装置があげられる。これらの基盤的設備につき更に必要度の程度を検討した。
