The subproject addresses the use of nanofiltration membranes for separation and recycling of homogeneously soluble catalysts. This will be done in close cooperation with the other sub-projects. Together with one subproject the separation and recycling of Rh- or Co-complexes and carbene organocatalysts in organic solvents will be investigated. The expected multi-functionalized catalyst systems should facilitate membrane separation due to the higher molecular weight which is a parameter often used to describe whether a separation might be successful. Similarly, for another subproject the separation and recycling of earth-abundant transition metals used as oxidation catalyst in aqueous solutions will be investigated. The potential of nanofiltration membranes for the solvent exchange necessary between these sub-projects will be investigated as well. This will be of special interest when high boiling solvents such as propylene carbonate are used. From the experiments data will be generated to characterize the membrane processes. The data will be descriptors at given operating conditions to setup a hybrid model of membrane nanofiltration. This, in return, will be used for Design of Experiments (DoE) to optimize the separation process. Together with another subproject a batch membrane process will be implemented with a self-learning system to control and maintain optimal conditions with respect to flux and retention. Besides the use of commercially available nanofiltration membranes one work package will address the copolymerization of functionalized ionic liquids to generate novel types of nanofiltration membranes as well as surface modification to improve the selectivity.
