今年度は、英国ルネサンス期におけるパストラル文学と農村・都市の変動との関連性を批判の射程にとりこんだ、現代の文学批評を検討・批判し、今後の研究課題となる問題点を摘出した。「単純な人人に普遍的で真実と思われる主題を、教養のある上流の言葉で語らせること」と、パストラルの原理を定義したのはW.Empsonであるが、現代の文学批評においては、そうした「主題」として当時の社会変動がもたらした諸問題を挙げてパストラルを論じる傾向が顕著である。L.A.MontroseやA.S.DaleyのAs You Like It論、あるいはE.SpenserのThe Shepheardes Calenderを論じたRobert Laneの研究がその代表である。それらの批評は当時の社会問題-人口の増加、インフレーション、囲い込みによる人口分布の変化、長子相続制による次三男の社会的下降、物価の高騰・飢饉による浮浪者の増加、共同体における歓待精神の喪失-がパストラル文学において表象されていることを指摘する。こうした歴史主義的研究は、等閑視されてきた社会問題を照射している点で重要であるが、それらの問題を表象するのになぜパストラルが選択されたかについては必ずしも明快ではない。たとえばMontroseは権力関係/社会関係を調停する場としてパストラルを規定しているが、As You Like Itなどのパストラル文学が「イデオロギー装置」として、社会変動のただ中にいた一般市民をいかなる主体に変容させる可能性があったかについては論じていないのである。ジェントリ-は地方所領に帰るべし、と歌ったR.Fanshaweの“Ode"に比べれば、As You Like Itなどは、より複雑な「イデオロギー装置」であることは確かである。当時の農村・都市の変動を視座に収め、多角的側面からパストラル文学を分析することによって、その「装置」の構造を明らかにすることが、今後の課題である。
