今年度は、英国ルネサンス期演劇およびパジャントリ-と建築空間との形態的関連性に着目した従来の研究を検討・批判し、今後の研究課題となる問題点について考察した。W.SypherはFour Stages of Renaissance Style(1955)で、美術史における四つの概念--ルネサンス、マニエリスム、バロック、後期バロック--を座標軸に据えて、近代初期の文学と建築の類縁性について論じている。たとえば、正確な比率、明確な輪郭、シンメトリーによって構成されているBrunelleschiのPazzi Chapelと、劇のアクションとプロットが遠近法によって描かれたイタリア絵画を連想させるShakespeareのRomeo and Julietはともにルネサンスに属し、一方、楕円や引き延ばされた長方形を特徴とするMichaelangelo設計のMedici Chapelと、決定不能の緊張と矛盾に満ちたJ.WebsterのThe Duchess of Malfiは、マニエリスムに属するといった具合である。Sypherの研究の問題点は、近代初期の文芸と建築の形態的類縁性を考えるにあたって、美術史上の概念区分から逸脱してしまう要素が前者に備わっていることを分析しきれていない点である。G.R.llockeが指摘したRomeo and Julietにおけるマニエリスム的要素、The Tempestにおけるバロック的要素がそれにあたる。今後の研究課題として、(1)各作品における、こうした美術史の概念から逸脱する部分を抽出し、建築空間との関連におて分析すること、(2)F.YatesがThe Art of Memory(1966)、Theatre of the World(1969)で実践してみせたように、近代初期における宇宙、建築、演劇舞台、身体のメタファーの関連性を考察すること、(3)S.K.Heninger,JR.がThe Subtext of Form in the English Renaissance(1994)で試みているように、当時の詩学を批評の射程に収めながら建築空間と文学の関連性について考察すること、が挙げられる。
