この研究では、新潟県の燕温泉を対象にして、その歴史的変遷過程を調査し、変遷過程の特徴を明らかにした。奨励研究(A)の補助金で、コンピューターと内蔵ハードディスクを購入したことにより、現地開き取り調査と文献調査によって得られたデータを、時系列上に系統だって、蓄積および解析することが可能となった。具体的には、燕温泉の歴史的変遷について、生活構造、日常生活施設、観光レクリエーション施設、土地利用状況、レクリエーション利用形態(温泉、登山、スキー)等の5項目から、その変遷の特徴を明らかにし、調査結果をコンピューターに入力した後に、年次別の図に加工できた。得られた変遷の特徴を以下に記す。(1)温泉の発見から集落の形成までは、まず、温泉の利用が起こり、浴槽等の施設ができ、その後、利用者を相手にする形でサービス業としての生活が始まっており、「利用→利用施設→生活」という順序で発展した自然発生型の温泉地である。(2)集落が形成されてからは、燕温泉の住民生活が、燕温泉利用者へのサービス業で支えられているために、まず、利用施設を整備し、次に、生活施設の整備という順番で、施設整備が行われてきた。(3)利用と利用施設の関係を見ると、1960年頃までは利用が先行し、この利用の実態をふまえた形で施設がつくられていたが、その後、利用施設を整備し、この利用施設から利用を誘導する形に変化した。このことにより型にはめられた利用が行われるようになっている。(4)立場条件のため、必要最低限の開発しかなされず、素朴な湯治場であったが、自動車道の開通により独立が解消し、徐々にではあるが都市的な性格がもたらされつつある。
