自然公園において、自然景観を眺望する体験は、きわめて重要な利用体験である。しかしながら、この様な眺望景観は、広範囲を展望するという特性から、地域の開発の圧力や、森林の伐採などにより、魅力の低下を引き起こし易いのが現状である。このため、自然景観地の景観計画を行う場合、眺望景観がどの様に認識され、評価されるのかを明らかにしておくことが重要である。そこで、自然景観地における多様な眺望景観を対象に、視覚認識上の特性を、眺望景観のイメージ、好ましさの評価構造を通して明らかにした。まず、眺望景観のイメージを把握するために、26対の形容詞対を用いた心理学的評価実験を行った。次に、好ましさに関する評価構造を把握するために、レパートリー・グリッド発展手法による面接調査実験を行った。被験者による認識特性より次のような結果を得た。眺望景観のイメージに関しては、26対の形容詞を用いて7段階の評価を得た。因子分析の結果より、「好ましさ」、「動き」、「力」、「スケール感」、「自然性」の5軸がイメージの形成に影響を与えていることがわかった。スライド写真別の因子得点を用いてクラスター分析を行い、その結果、7グループに分けた。「嫌いな/好きな」形容詞対の評価値と、好ましさの順位との相関係数は-0.946であり、高い相関を示している。好ましさのネットワーク図より、好ましさの評価基準として、「構成要素が多様」、「広々としている」、「動的である」、「複雑である」、「シンボル要素がある」、「明るい」が挙げられた。より具体的には、「構成要素が多様」で「形状が複雑」であり、「水の流れ」が存在し、「遠くに山並が見え」、「手前の空間が開けている」と、好ましく感じた。
