基本的には、昨年度同一テーマで交付を受けた研究を継続するかたちで研究を行なった。昨年度に一応の完成をみた三重県地域に関しては、若干の補足調査にとどめ、本年度はとにかく瀬戸内海地域の資料収集および路線プランからみた地域交通体系分析の展望論文の完成に力を注いだ。瀬戸内海地域に関する調査では、昨年度から行なってきた広島県立文書館所蔵史料の調査を概ね終えることができ、ひきつづいて岡山県総務部公文書館対策班及び山口県文書館所蔵史料の調査にとりかかる一方、対象地域の現地調査を行なっている。また、当該地域に関する「鉄道者文書」の調査では、国立公文書館所蔵分が概ね終了しつつあり、ひきつづき交通博物館所蔵分の筆写にとりかかっている。本調査の成果の一部を、第62回社会経済史学会大会(平成5年10月)において「昭和初期の地方交通問題と局地鉄道事業」と題して報告を行ない、その内容を「局地鉄道事業の展開と地域交通体系の再編成」と題して『社会経済史学』に投稿、審査中である。さらに来年度以降も、当該地域の調査を進め、海運と鉄道をめぐる交通体系変容に関する論文をまとめる予定である。一方、全国的展望論文は、昨年来の調査をベースに、静岡県、佐賀県、栃木県に関するフィールド調査と文書史料収集(国立公文書館及び神戸大学)を行ない、その成果を1993年度人文地理学会大会(平成5年11月)において、「わが国における近代交通体系の形成」と題して報告を行ない、報告内容を「支線鉄道の組織化からみたわが国における近代交通体系の形成」と題して『地理学評論』に投稿、審査中である。これらは、いずれも将来、学位(博士)審査論文として提出予定の研究の骨子を構成するものであり、来年度以降も残された課題に向けて研究をつづける予定である。
