27頭からなるチンパンジー集団(0歳〜37歳、成年オス4・メス12、少年オス1・メス4、乳幼児オス1・メス5)を対象とし、定位的操作および道具使用行動の出現状況を社会的場面において観察した。【方法】チンパンジーの屋外飼育場に、(1)木製スプーン(30cm長)、(2)アルミボウル(16cm径、7cm深)、(3)綿タオル(35cm×55cm)、(4)プラスチック箱(43cm×35cm×23cm)、(5)木製の棒(90cm長)からなる新奇の対象物を投入し、物が操作された全エピソードについて、どのような状況で誰がどのように物を操作したかを筆記によって記録する。適宜VTRによる記録もおこなった。1セッションには、同一対象物のみ10個を投入し(プラスチックボックスのみ3個)、観察時間は2時間とした。同一対象物につき3セッション6時間の観察をおこない、総観察時間は30時間。【結果】投入した対象物に対する対象操作行動は、最年少の個体(1993年6月生まれ)を除く26頭に生じた。また、5種の対象物はすべて道具使用行動にもちいられた。そのうち、アルミボウルをもちいて屋外飼育場の周囲の溝から水を飲む行動は、0〜2歳の4頭すべてと33歳以上のメス3頭を除く、3歳以上の20頭に幅広くみられた。アルミボウルをもちいた飲水行動は「手に持ったボウルで水をすくう」ほか、「溝に一旦放し入れたボウルを上から手で押し、その後水の入ったボウルを手で引き上げる」タイプも3歳以上の個体で幅広く頻繁にみられた。一方、箱を用いて(置く、重ねる)窓に到達する行動は5〜7歳の個体に頻出し、定位的操作としては、継起的かつ調整的行動(箱の置き直し、重ね直し)が頻繁にみられた。5歳メス1頭はプラスチック箱観察最終日、多様な定位的操作からなる試行錯誤的行動の末に、初めて2つの箱を積み重ねて置いて踏み台とし、窓に到達した。投入された対象物を媒介にした社会的交渉も頻出し、対象物を保持した個体への「のぞき込み」行動は3歳以上の個体で見られた。
