科学研究費を用いて、関連資料の購入を行い、また東京大学図書館、国会図書館、明治文庫、福島県立医科大学に資料収集旅行に赴き、資料を閲覧、複写した。これに基づく研究の成果としては、平成5年11月に佐賀女子短期大学にて行われた日本比較文学西日本大会にて、「性生活の誕生-Vita Sexualisと自然主義再考」というタイトルで発表を行い、森鴎外の衛生観・売春に対する考え方などを論じて、廃娼運動を支えていた「純潔」というような概念、また、「性生活」という意識自体が歴史的な産物であり、近代のイデオロギーであったことを立証した。本研究テーマに直接関わるものとして、論文“Purity Campaign as a Literary Context"をJournal of Japanese Studiesに発表した(平成6年春刊行予定、版下校正済み)。これは廃娼運動の中心となった雑誌「廃娼」の記事をていねいに読み解きながら、同運動の思想的背景がブルジョア・ピューリタン的な考えであり、その意味で社会の資本主義化と並行するものであった、したがって、単純な進歩史観では裁断しきれないものであることを論じた。こうした研究成果を通じて、廃娼運動に対する新しい視野が開けたとともに、コレヲケース・スタディとして、近代の性愛観がパラダイムとして相対化できる可能性を示唆したのであり、近代文化史、風俗史、比較文化研究などに新しい展開を、本研究は呼び覚ますものとなったと言えるだろう。
