研究は,以下の段階を踏んで進行させた。すなわち,(1)ワイヤ断線前駆信号に関する文献収集および検出信号の検討,(2)検出システムのハードウェア構成の検討,(2)検出システムのセッティングと動作の確認,(4)入力信号解析プログラムの作成,(5)市販機に対する検出システムの試行と検出精度の評価,である。まず,ワイヤ断線の前駆信号に関して文献等による調査を行い,ピーク電流等の一般的な電気信号の他にワイヤ振動およびワイヤ張力の変化を入力する必要性があると判断した。そこでこれらの機械センサからの信号を入力できる検出システムを考案し,ハードウェア機構を決定した。ハードウェアの要となるコンピュータには,加工センサの入力および信号処理を行う上でマルチタスクが可能なUNIXワークステーションを採用した。このシステムによるワイヤ放電加工中の信号入力が可能であることを確認した後,信号のフィルタリングや各信号間の相関を調べるなどの処理を種々検討し,ワイヤ断線に関する前駆信号の発見を試みた。研究の結果として,(1)ワイヤの断線の原因は1つに限られず,いくつかのパターンがある。(2)従って,その前駆信号も複数存在するため,少数の信号をそれぞれ単独で監視するだけでは不十分である。(3)ワイヤ断線は非常に短時間に行われるため,前駆信号の検出から対策を講ずるまでを相当高速に行わなければならない。等が判明した。
