Production of New Print and Video Materials for College English Courses

The Department of English of the University of Tokyo, Komaba, has been running a new program in general English since 1993, aimed at almost all the students (about 3,600 each year) in Komaba. The teaching materials consist of an anthology of various essays, and videos to go with it. The two initial anthologies, as well as video materials, were made by faculty members of the Department.With the aid of this grant, we have :(1)published the second, entirely renewed edition of the anthology for first-year students (The Universe of English II,The University of Tokyo Press, 1998 ;(2)published the second, half-renewed edition of the anthology for second-year students (The Expanding Universe of Enflish, Limited Komaba Edition, The University of Tokyo Press, 1997) ;(3)made new video materials to go with(1) ; the scripts are included in the report.(4)made new video materials to go with(2) ; the scripts are included in the report.(5)conducted a test, in which first-year students and second-year students were required to answer the same questions. This was to gauge how students'English improves-or deteriorates-in one year after entering the college. The results are included in the report.(6)asked students who were the first "graduates" of this program to write down what they felt about the program. Some of their responses are included in the report.The Universe of English II has been widely read among general readers, and we hope the book is helping a considerable number of people in general, not just college students, improve their English.
