永井荷風は、その作中に江戸音曲を実に頻繁に描いている。この聴覚的要素は、音読から黙読への読書習慣の変化に伴い生じてきた、近代の作品受容の変遷の一側面を、集約的に提示してくれるものと考えられる。先ず基礎作業として、永井荷風が作品中に扱っている江戸音曲を特定した。語り物すなわち浄瑠璃としては、常磐津、富本、清元の豊後三流を始め、新内や一中、薗八、さらには河東等の古曲にも触れている。また唄物では、長唄はもちろん、哥沢等の小曲類にも興味を示す。これら音曲の作中での扱い方は、歴史的背景への考察をも含め、荷風はその音色にそれぞれ別の目的を担わせる。それぞれの歌詞に関しては、現在のものとほとんど変わりがない。時に詞章について解説し、時に音の効用面を強調しと、それぞれの場合により扱い方を変化させている。大雑把には、古曲や現在あまり演奏されない作品に、滅び去るものへの愛着を示すものが多い。江戸音曲の、作中における実際的な聴覚的な効果を考察するために、現在実際の演奏されるものを聴き、その不足分を、市販されているコンパクト・ディスクやカセット・テープ、LPレコード等により聴いた。これは、より客観的な分析のために、今後コンピューターによる解析作業に移る予定である。さらにはこれを、前述のとおり黙読という読書形態の問題と関係づけて考察し、黙読という近代の受容形態の特殊性について理論付けたい。
