本研究は、潜在記憶現象を解明するための新たな理論的枠組みとして提唱された発達差仮説の妥当性を実験的に検証するために、一連の学習実験を実施した。その研究成果は以下の通りである。1.実験1では、小学校低学年・高学年ならびに大学生を被験者として、符号化時の刺激処理課題(生成/読み)が潜在記憶に及ぼす効果を発達的に検討した。実験の結果、潜在記憶の指標である単語完成課題におけるプライミング効果は、読み条件では発達差が認められなかったのに対し、生成条件では年齢を関数とした遂行の上昇が確認された。すなわち、生成条件における児童のプライミングは新項目条件に比して有意ではあったものの、読み条件よりも有意に劣っていた。これに対し、成人では生成条件において読み条件と同等の有意なプライミング効果が確認された。2.実験2では、精神遅滞者と健常成人を被験者として、潜在記憶の遂行と知能要因との関係を検討した。実験の結果、読み条件での潜在記憶の遂行は精神遅滞者と健常成人間で有意差が認められなかったのに対し、生成条件では知能を関数とした潜在記憶尺度での遂行の向上が確認された。この結果から、精神遅滞者の潜在記憶は小学校高学年健常児と類似の遂行を示すことが明らかになった。3.上記の一連の実験結果に基づいて、潜在記憶の発達過程に関して理論的解明を試みた。従来の理論的枠組みでは、潜在記憶は発達的に初期の段階で成立し、年齢や知能の要因からの影響を受けにくいと唱えられていたが、本研究の実験結果から、年齢および知能要因を関数として遂行の上昇を示し、概念的処理に深く依存した潜在記憶成分の存在が実証された。
