ウェイソン選択課題と条件真理表判断課題において観察されるマッチングバイアスが明示された名辞への注意というメカニズムで生じているというEvansの主張にたいする反例を心理学実験によって示した。マッチングバイアス説に従えば、「Aである」でも「Aではない」でも注意をうけるのはAであり、AやAを含む組み合わせが選択される。この説をさらに拡張すれば、「A以外ではない」でもAが選択されることになる。しかし筆者は、注意原理を高次推論の説明に用いるには限界があるとして、否定辞が含まれる条件文では、否定辞が削除されることがルールの違反であるというヒューリスティクスを招き、「A以外ではない」では「A以外」がルール全体にたいする違反を導いていると考える。そこで、「表がR以外ではないならば、裏は2である」などの二重否定条件文を材料として、両課題を集団実験で被験者に課した。マッチングバイアス理論と筆者の理論から反応パターンを予想し、実際の選択率と照合した結果、ウェイソン選択課題においてはマッチングバイアス説がデータを説明したが、条件真理表課題では筆者の理論の方がデータをよりよく説明した。すなわち、ウェイソン選択課題には事例とルールの関連性判断の過程が含まれ、そこでマッチングの効果が生じていると考えられたが、条件真理表判断課題は別のメカニズムで生じていることが示唆された。この成果は、過去30年ほど頑健であると考えられているマッチングバイアスに疑義を生じさせたものであり、注意原理に基づくバイアスアプローチの限界を示すものである。
