wason選択課題は、人間の推論と論理の関係を検討するのに適切な課題である。しかしこの課題を、条件文を違反とする可能性がある事例を選択する意志決定とみなすと、期待効用理論を適用することが可能である。この考え方は、人間の2種類の合理性、すなわち規範論理と期待効用最大化原理が推論のさいにどのように作用しあっているのかを検討しようというアプローチと一致する。今年度は、このアプローチに関すると思われる違反発見の確率についての期待効用(課題は違反がある可能性があるカードの選択だが、その可能性が高いほど違反への確率的な効用が高く、選択されやすい)や、違反発見の認知的期待効用(違反についての情報を多く獲得できるカードほど選択されやすい)、認知的努力(違反発見のための認知的努力が小さいほど選択されやすい)、などの原理を主張する諸理論をまず解説し、そのうちの確率的期待効用と認知的期待効用を検証する実験を行った。「右利き-左利き」は確率的に大きく異なり、条件文に項として含まれれば、自然な文脈で確率についての期待効用や認知的期待効用を操作することが可能である。実験の結果、確率についての期待効用仮説は支持されなかったが、認知的効用仮説が支持された。すなわち、「pならば,q」という条件文で、pの集合が小さければpの1事例から得られる条件文の真偽についての情報は多くなり、pが選択されやすいということである。このことはヘンペルの逆理の心理学的な説明にもなる。
