鹿児島県大島郡与論町(与論島麦屋地区)において、延べ40日間住み込み、聞き取り調査と参与調査を行い、漁業関係の民俗資料(漁法、衣食住、年中行事、民間信仰等、)と、島外への出漁・移住経験者のライフヒストリー(出漁の状況、移住先での生活、漁法の展開、帰島後の生活等)の聞き取り資料を得た。また、出漁と移住に関する文献資料(特に同郷人組織「与論会」関係)を収集した。そして、与論島で得られたこれからの資料を、既に調査した屋久島に形成された与論島民の移住集落の民俗と比較した。屋久島に移住した与論島民により始められたロープ引きというトビウオ漁法は、屋久島漁業の根幹をなすまでに発展してきているが、このロープ引き漁法を視点として、与論島で得られた資料と比較した結果、屋久島のロープ引き漁法は、与論島や移住先で行われていたトビウオ漁法などの技術を基盤としつつも、屋久島の中で独自に展開した漁法であることがわかった。さらに、ほかの民俗事象についても比較した結果、屋久島に居住する与論島民の保持する民俗は、単に母村・与論島の民俗を移したのではなく、また、屋久島の民俗に同化したのでもなく、屋久島の中で「ヨロンノ衆」(与論系屋久島民)として、独自の屋久島民俗文化を形成しつつあると言える。また、与論島民は屋久島だけでなく、徳之島や沖永良部島など奄美諸島や福岡県など各地に移住集落を形成しており、そのなかで、同郷人組織である「与論会」が、移住先の生活の中で重要な役割を果たしていることがわかった。しかし、移住地域は各地に分散しているため、与論島移住者の集中的総合的な調査がなされておらず、関係資料も分散している状態であることもわかった。そこで、今後の研究計画として、同郷人組織「与論会」の活動を中心とした与論島移住者の民俗学的調査と関係資料の収集と把握が提起される。
