项目摘要

1.代名詞の指示(reference)に対するイントネーションの効果を検討した。その結果、イントネーションが談話中の語句同士の依存関係を合図すること、代名詞の指示が前記のような談話中の依存関係と同様な幾つかの重要な特性を持つこと、しかしながら、この二つのタイプの依存関係は同一のものとは考えられないことを発見した。2.これらの結果はイントネーションがどこに依存関係が起こるかを指摘し、ある表現の持つ指示的特性がどのような依存関係をとるかを決定するというイントネーションと指示の統合する新しい理論を導いた。例えば、限定的指示語(代名詞、名称、定名詞)がイントネーションにおいて他の表現に依存している場合、その指示語はその表現と同一指示でなければならない。一方、不定詞が同様の環境にある場合、不定詞はイントネーション的に依存している表現と同一指示には成りえない。以上の成果を説明するにあたっては、統語論的情報と語用論的情報を結び付けるという従来のアプローチにはない考え方を必要とした。このような手法を発展させることは、本研究の目標の一つである。3.英語において談話中の依存関係を示す第一の標識は、抑揚の無い、低音調のイントネーションとして表わされる、音韻論的アクセントの欠如である。日本語においても、これと類似の談話中依存関係の効果が認められることを発見した。しかし、談話中の依存関係を示す標識は、日本語では、様々な助詞の使用によって表わされ、イントネーションによっては行われない。この二つの依存関係を示す標識の関連性を検討するさらなる研究が望まれる。4.未完成である本研究の成果を言語学の分野の他の研究と関連づけるための準備段階として、エドウィン・ウイリアムス、ハンス・カンブ、ディビッド・カプラン、ジェームス・ヒギンボッサム、ロバート・メイ&メバ-ト・フィエンゴなどによる多種多様な文献を収集し、研究した。
