日本における牛ウイルス性下痢粘膜病(BVD-MD)ウイルスは、我々が診断に利用しているPCR法によると4型の遺伝子型に区別できる。近年、北海道内においてこの4型のいづれにも分類することのできないPCR増幅パターンを示したBVD-MDウイルスが、粘膜病発症牛および持続感染牛から検出された。本研究では、この分類不能な遺伝子型ウイルスが検出された発症牛の白血球を、同一遺伝子型のウイルスが検出された持続感染牛に接種し、その病原性を確認するために一般臨床症状、血液所見、PCR法による遺伝子型を経時的に観察した。発症牛は約5か月齢のホルスタイン雌牛で、下痢および口腔内潰瘍などの典型的なBVD-MDの症状が観察され、抹梢血白血球を用いたPCR法によりBVD-MDウイルス遺伝子が検出された。その増幅パターンは、NK型と類似していたが、増幅遺伝子の大きさがNK型とは異なっていた。すなわちプライマーF1-R1で増幅される遺伝子が本来の大きさより約300bp大きく、逆にHCF1-HCR1で増幅される遺伝子が約300bp小さかった。持続感染牛は、発育不良である以外は特に臨床症状に異常は認められず、PCR法により発症牛と同じ型のBVD-MDウイルス遺伝子が検出された。この牛に発症牛の末梢血白血球を投与し、粘膜病発症の有無を経時的に観察した。その結果、投与後約1カ月目に発熱が確認され、約2カ月目に歯肉の糜爛、舌の潰瘍、下痢が確認された。またこの時点で、末梢血白血球を用いたPCR法によるウイルス遺伝子の型には変化が認められなかった。さらに、剖検所見においてもBVD-MDの特徴的病変である消化管粘膜の潰瘍が確認された。以上の成績より、今回確認された分類不可能な遺伝子のBVD-MDウイルスは、既知の型のウイルス同様の病原性を有しており、新しい遺伝子型のウイルスであることが示唆された。
