The production by computer of indexes to Pali Tipitaka textsThis research aims at developing the softwear of computer-generated indexes to the whole Pali texts published by the Pali Text Society. In order to this research purpose we first chose the Dhammapada edited by O.von Hinuber and K.R.Norman as a verse work and we made the word index to the edition. This index lists words in crasis as they appear in the text, rather than separate words. In addition to the index, a reverse word index, a pada index and a reverse pada index are also produced simultaneously. These indexes were published as a single book by the Pali Text Society.Next, we made a word index to the Vinaya-pitaka based upon Hermann Oldenberg's edition, published in five volumes by Williams and Norgate and subsequently by the Pali Text Society. There were lots of misprints, misreadings and omissions of letters in the edition. However, by exchanging many letters and through personal discussions with Professor Norman, we solved these sorts of problems and formed a perfect text of the Vinaya-pitaka on the personal computer.This word index presents every word and word-group as they appear in the text. For instance, although the word group dighayuka can be separated into digha ayuka, it is printed as dighayuka. Also, the index does not distinguish between lower and upper case letters. This means that proper names, capitalised in the original text, are lower case letters in the index. This index entitled the Index to the Vinaya-pitaka was also published by the Pali Text Society.Through these works we accomplished the program to make the word indexes to the Pali texts in verse and prose. We are now trying to produce the word index to the Digha-nikaya published in three volumes, but many corrections and changes in this text as well as the Vinaya-pitaka will be necessary.
