The results of develpoment of implantable functional electric stimulation (FES) system for restoration of motor function are as follows.(1) Power supplement to the implantable system was achieved by high-efficiency inductive coupling method using a flat loop coil set with amorphous magnetic fine wires. In information transmission between the controller out of the body and the stimulator in the body, a bi-directional transmission pass is permitted for the purpose of verifying the operation state of the implantable system. This information feedback from the stimulator in the body can make the safety of the system operations increase.(2) The implantable system was miniaturized with FPGA (Field Programabe Gate Array) for digital circuit and MCM (Multi-Chip Module) for analog circuit. The latter was assembled with high performance analog IC chips on a multi-layr ceramic substrate.(3) A set of information transmission coils with a style of letter of 8 was developed with double side flexible printed circuit board of 0.15 mm thick. These coils can not only prevent interference of power transmission but also increase the tolerance of position alignment between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil.(4) The stimulation system was assembled on a double side printed circuit board of 45 x 45 mm using FPGA,MCM and surface mount electric parts. The circuit board, receiving coils and the connector for stimulation electrodes of 16 were assembled in a package with a practical size of 50 x 65 x 11 mm.(5) From these results, the first trial of multi-chanel implantable FES system for clinical usage in Japan has been achieved.
