本研究は、北海道大学で開発しているIntelligentPadを用いて主として物理や数学の学習支援システムを開発した。本研究では、従来のマイクロワールドで実現できていなかった、異なった学習項目に作成したすべてのオブジェクト(部品やツール)を共存させ柔軟に組み合わせて一つのマイクロワールドで利用することを可能にした。また、実世界にある計測機や制御機器のインターフェースを持つオブジェクトをマイクロワールドに定義し、マイクロワールドの中から実世界の機器を制御できるようにした。実世界で行う実験をディスプレス上に表示して、マイクロワールドにおけるシミュレーション結果と比較できるようにした。これらを実現することによって、学習者は、マイクロワールドにおけるシミュレーションと自身の仮説による実験や実世界における実験をマイクロワールドの中で思考を停止することなく即座に比較することができるようになった。実世界の計測器とマイクロワールドを統合することによって、実世界にある独立した機器をマイクロワールドで統合できるようになったはがりでなく、実世界のさまざまな機器からマイクロワールドのオブジェクトを操作できるようになった。システムの開発は、ワークステーションと汎用のパーソナルコンピュータで行った。パーソナルコンピュータに本学習支援システムを開発したことによって、従来の学習支援システムにはない小学校や中学校、高校で利用できる実用的なシステムが開発できたと考えている。
