METHODS OF "CONTEMPORARY CHILDREN'S LITERATURE" : MAJOR DEVELOPMENT IN THEORY AND NARRATIVE PRAXIS

1. (1) In this research, the circumstances of children's literature betwenn 1955-1964 are reconsidered, mainly focused on criticisms published in Japan Children's Literature. Points of this examination are as followed : that 'realism' and 'subjectivity' were emphasized in this critical activity in late 1950s, that an unity of sociability and interest was accomplished in longer works around 1960, so was a pursuit of imagination, and that two genres, 'realism' and 'fantasy', were established after 1960.(2) Much attention should be paid to the important role in which Takayama Tsuyoshi playd in 1950s, to the trend of general literary criticism in those days, and to the negative attitude which some specialists of foreign children's literature showed against the tendency of easy applauding to western works.(3) It is necessary to compare the contemporary comments on longer works with the up-to-date comments on them.(4) On surveying a situation of children's literature, every continuous series published during this period must be studied intensively, including especially that of detective stories or that of retold stories.2.Some literary comments are easily found which touched even upon the cultural circumstances. So it is obvious that children's literature was very sensitive to mass media.It must be hereafter studied in each work how the ideal 'growth' was realized and whether the 'communication' expected was actualized.
