APEC in the Year 2000 : An Empirical Study on the Development of Intra-Industry Trade

The first phase of this study was to collect and review literature regarding intra-industry trade. While doing so, I visited Dr.Fukasaku at OECD to consult on past research erfforts there and to find future collaboration prospects. OECD has started a series of study on China and this helped us to move one step further by exchanging documents and information. Later in summer I visited Brandeis University. I met Professors Plummer, Kreinin, Petri and others to discuss regional integration and recent development of modeling. I rearned particularly the efforts of GTAP research group and the SMART model of GATT,both of which contributed to our research. Prof.Plummer provided tariff data. After installing a workstation with relevant software, I downloaded the data and models of GTAP and tried to find out the best methodology to simulate the year 2000 APEC economies. In January 1996 I reported "Intra-industry Trade of Japan and the U.S.", one of the research results, at the Western Economic Association's Hong Kong convention. I wrote a few articles on intra-industry trade and the Asia pacific after this conference and collected data further and managed to compile 47 sector OECD trade data. In May 1996 I reported another result in Kuala Lumpur.
