本年度は日本各地に残された江戸時代<博物図譜>について、網羅的な所在調査を行ったが、その際に<博物図譜>と大いに関係すると見られる<完成画>についても注意を払うことで、これまでに認識されていた<博物図譜>の範疇を越えて多くの資料に行き当たることができた。しかし18-19世紀の日本の<博物図譜>は、いまだ美術品としての一般的認識が薄く、美術館・博物館におけるこれらの書誌的分類・整理作業も全国的にはまだまだ手薄の状態で、個人所蔵の品も含めると、個別の作品データの収集は今後さらに数年はかかるものと予想された。一方同時代ヨーロッパの<博物図譜>・博物学研究に関しては、近年とくにフランス・アメリカにおいて、いわゆる<新美術史>といわれる研究動向とも軌を一にし、<視覚文化論>としても大いに論じられはじめている。こうした研究の現状は、日本における<博物図譜>研究においても今後検討すべき問題を提示しており、欧米の関係図書・論文を早急に収集できたことによる、重要な分析結果であった。本年度では上記のような作業を進めるなかで、18-19世紀・江戸期の博物学がもたらした<桜狂>という現象についてまず論文を2編まとめた。<桜狂>とは文字通り「桜花愛好」を意味する。この「サクラ・マニア」ともよべる現象は、種々の桜木の収集とともに、そこから「桜だけを描く」という極めて得意な画風を見せた<三熊派>という画派を生むことになった。こうしたecole(流派)の存在は世界的にも珍しくまた興味深い。さらに日本では、<花鳥画>と深い関係をもつ<博物図譜>であるが、この関係は西洋における<博物図譜>と<静物画>との関係とも酷似している。この事実に注目し、本年では試論として葛飾北齋の「静物画的」花鳥画である「西瓜図」について、博物学の視点から従来見解に対してまったく新しい解釈を提出する論文を発表した。
