本年度は当該研究の締め括りとして、大きくわけて3つの問題処理にあたった。第一には、江戸時代の「庭園画」作品の所在確認の作業である。これについては前年度より引きつづきの作業となったが、明治時代に庭園史家・小澤圭次郎が「園林叢書」(雑誌『風俗画報』に掲載)として紹介した大名庭園画のほとんどは、国立国会図書館に模写本として納められたのだが、原本の行方がわからなくなっているものがかなりある。今回私はそのうちのいくつかの現存を確認するとともに、小澤が紹介していない作品もあらたに見出だすことができた。調査をかさね気付いたことは、庭園画の多くが江戸時代大名屋敷の見取り図や測量図など、一般には「文書資料」に分類される作品と一緒に保管されており、「美術品」の扱いを受けずにきているものがかなりある。本研究において私は、第二の問題として江戸時代庭園画の美術史上での概念規定ーーこれは〈真景図〉であるとともに〈地図〉として評価できるのだがーーの考察に取り組んだ。この点とも関連して今後検討が進められなければならないのは、「文書資料」や「地図」を〈美術品〉と切りは離すことによって見失われる、江戸時代庭園画のような、知られざる歴史的美術品の再発見と保護・保全の必要という課題なのである。こうした調査と考察の過程を経て、第三に2年間にわたる本研究課題の総括としての報告書として、論文「江戸時代〈庭園画〉研究序説」執筆した。本論文では、江戸時代庭園文化の最も優れた側面を見せていた、松平定信所有の庭園「浴恩園」を取り上げている。ただし紙面の都合上、論文の詳細すべてを掲載することはできなかったので、全体の詳論は1999年10月に発行予定の著書『江戸文学と絵画』(東京大学出版会)において大幅に加筆の上発表したいと考えている。
