申請者の前研究(「物語理解における視覚的イメージの視点の役割:風間書房、1996年)において、視覚的イメージの視点の操作には発達段階があること、その段階によって異なる文章の視点との関係があることがわかった。また、視覚的イメージの視点が物語理解に部分的に促進効果を持つことも明らかになった。本研究は、先の研究に時系列的観点を導入し、物語を理解している際の視覚的イメージの視点の転換の軌跡を明らかにすることである。予備調査として、物語のシーン分割に関する妥当性を検討した。その材料は、前研究で使用した物語を用いた。その結果、分割されたシーンには意味的なまとまりがあり、かつ、他シーンとは独立していることが認められた。次に、被験者として短大学生を用い、1シーンの聴覚刺激を提示した後に、そのシーンに対応した視覚刺激を提示した。視覚刺激は、文章の視点がおかれている登場人物から見た物語内の情景をコンピュータ・グラフィックス・ソフトで作成した。被験者の課題は、聴覚提示された物語の1シーンによって喚起された自分の視覚的イメージと、提示された視覚刺激との異同を判断することである。その反応のパターンと反応時間(ミリ秒単位)を計測した。その結果、反応パターンには個人差が認められた。また、前シーンの視覚的イメージの視点から別の視点に自発的に転換する場合には、反応時間がそれ以外の場合よりも長くかかった。よって、物語によって喚起される視覚的イメージには個人差があり、個人内では比較的一貫性がある。しかし、それらを転換する際にはそれ以外よりも時間がかかり、心理的な操作がなされていると考えられる。その心理的負荷が理解に与える影響を検討することが、今後の課題であろう。
