まず古代寺院についての情報を報告書の記載を集成することからはじめ、近畿地方の寺院を中心に調査歴・遺構・遺物とりわけ瓦を概観できるようにした。そのうえで、畿内に比較的近い地域を取り上げ、伝播過程を検討した。具体的には、丹波・丹後・但馬などの近畿地方北部と播磨・近江などの寺院が中心である。考察の中心としたのは瓦の文様と製作技術であるが、とくに工人の移動のレベルで理解できるように、細部にわたる観察をこころがけた。その結果、単弁蓮華文軒丸瓦の分布や法隆寺式軒平瓦の分布に特徴が認められ、官衙との関わりが深い寺院に畿内からの伝播の第1波がみられる現象を見いだすことができた。また、伝播の過程では交通路との関わりがあることも考えられ、近江では独自色を持つ瓦が用いられた寺院は東山道から離れて立地し、畿内色の瓦が用いられた寺院が東山道沿いに展開する様子が認められた。一般に、近畿地方では、古代寺院の数も多い一方で、近接した寺院でも寺院の伽藍配置や建物の構造、所用瓦の文様などに違いがみられる場合があり、明確な地域性を形成することの方が稀である。今回の検討では、その違いの原因として寺院の性格の差が反映されていると考えたが、大和の大寺院から技術がストレートに持ち込まれる寺院の性格が重要であることを強調しておきたい。次に、近畿地方の外にも検討を及ぼし、一国あたりの寺院の数が多い地域である讃岐を取り上げた。ここでも、複数の技術の波が相互に影響を及ぼしながら伝播し、定着していく様子がうかがえた。こうした事例をケーススタディーとしてまとめる作業を最後におこなっている。
