昨年度に引き続き、播磨国多可郡の様相を検討した。郡内の後期古墳についての情報を収集し、その墳丘や石室の規模から階層性を類推した。そして中町東山古墳群が傑出した規模をもつことを改めて確認し、周辺に設けられる郡衙-思い出遺跡-や郡寺-多哥寺遺跡-との歴史的脈絡を検討した。この点をさらに追求するため、それぞれの遺跡から出土した土器を観察し、年代的な先後関係や生産流通について検討した。そして同時期の飛鳥地域の土器と比較した結果、都城の土器を模倣した暗文土師器が多可郡内の官衙遺跡に導入され、それが周辺の墳墓に採り入れられる現象を明らかにすることができた。風土記が残っている播磨国における検討をさらに進める一方で、周辺の丹波国、丹後国、但馬国についてもひろく情報を収集した。これらの諸国においても播磨国と同様に各郡の中心的な後期古墳群を抽出することができ、それぞれが郡領クラスの活動を示すものと考えた。郡衙が明らかな郡が少ないが、福知山市域を中心とする丹波国天田郡については、下山古墳群と半田遺跡-天田郡衙推定地-との関係が明瞭である。下山古墳群では7世紀後半にも埋葬がおこなわれており、東山古墳群との共通性として注目できる。最後に、地域編成としての郡の実態を風土記に即して理解しようとするうえでは、出雲国が最も豊富な記事に恵まれ、有利な立場にあるといえる。そこで出雲各郡の状況を比較してみた。ここでは古墳の構造自身に著しい地域性が看取でき、首長墳が採用する墓室の形式がその性格を反映している可能性もうかがえた。このような現象は、近畿地方では不明瞭であるけれども、各郡の郡領層の性格を古墳から明らかしえる可能性が示唆されていると言えるだろう。
