项目摘要

本年度は、19世紀のアメリカ文学、特にヘンリー・ジェイムズと当時台頭しつつあった大衆消費社会の関係を考察してきた過去の研究を更に発展させて、ジェイムズの作品の精読を続けると同時に、消費という観点から現代社会の土台となった〈近代〉そのものの構造性、即ち近代的な都市生活者の行動パターンや心理状態を明らかにし、そのような近代都市の特色を同時代の芸術家たちがどのように捉えていたかを考察した。具体的には、デパートメントストアが世界で最初に誕生し、ジェイムズも好んでそのモダンな様子を作品のなかで描いた19世紀末のパリに特に焦点を当てて、ロンドンやシカゴと比較しながら、そこに現れた新しい消費社会が表層的イメージとすばやい動きに満ちた世界である点を考察し、そこから表層とスピードが実は近代という時代そのものを読み解く重要な概念である事実にまで洞察を深めた。更に、そのような都会に住む人々が新たに獲得した外界認識の形が、当時絵画や文学など広く芸術一般に浸透していた印象主義的なヴィジョンと同一であった点を、様々の文学作品や絵画を例にとりながら、考察した。資料は、小説、絵画、写真、経済学や社会学、歴史学関係の論文や書物(当時のものと現代のもの)など多方面に及び、学際的な視点を提示できたのではないかと思う。これら一連の研究は、本年度の研究成果公開促進費をいただいて共著で1996年2月に南雲堂から上梓された『イメージとしての都市-学際的都市文化論』のなかの、「都市と消費」の章にまとめた。

February 1996, Nanyuntang published a chapter on "Urban Consumption".
