今年度は、19世紀後半のアメリカの代表的な小説家ヘンリー・ジェイムズと当時新しく台頭しつつあった大衆消費社会との関係について考察した。特に大衆消費社会の表層志向という現代的な特徴、即ちモノの外面的価値を何より重視する特徴がジェイムズの作品中にどのような形で描き込まれているのかという点について考察を深めようと試みた。まず今年度の前半では、内在的審美的価値に根ざした貴族的な高級文化を複製し華やかなイメージのみが売りもののまがいもの商品へと変質させてゆく新商法の論理を、ジェイムズの初期の代表作The Americanがいかに効果的に促えているかを検証し、この論考は5月の日本英文学会で口頭発表した。これと並行して、以前書いたThe Ambassadors論を、表層を操作する古い時代の文化的戦略が近代広告の戦略へと転換してゆく様子についての小説中の描写に着目して書き改め、日米文化系学術交流センターから出版された論文集に発表した。更に今年度の後半では、引き続き、The Ambassadorsを再考し、9月の日本アメリカ文学会例会で、この小説の主人公の印象主義的なヨーロッパ体験と当時の消費者の心的メカニズムとの類似性を指摘した。しかし、11月に出たアメリカのヘンリー・ジェイムズ協会のジャーナルに偶然同じ論点に立脚する論文が発表されたため、例会発表を練り直す必要が生じ、The Ambassadorsが印象主義的な消費スタイルを表象すると同時にそのイデオロギー性をも暴きまた、小説だけでなく、ジェイムズの自伝や時事評論、アメリカ旅行記などを通じて、ジェイムズ自身当時の振興のスペタクルを求める商業社会に対し共感と反発の相反する反応をしていた点についても考察し、この研究成果は1994年刊行予定の『言語と文化の諸相:奥田教授退官記念論集』に掲載予定である。
