英語の右方移動と左方移動とでは、その局所性が大きく異なり、右方移動については意味役割による制約や、「重さ」による難易度の差などの要因があり、これら2種類の移動は全く別個の制約に従っているものと一見思われる。しかし例文を検討していくうちに、右方移動が示す制約の中で、狭義の統語論の中で扱うことができる部分があるとの見解に達した。「意味」や「重さ」といった狭義の統語論以外で扱われるべき部分を捨像して考えてみると、右方移動が示す厳格な局所性は狭義の統語論の枠組みで捉えられるはずだというわけである。こうした右方移動の制約と、従来より学界で研究が進んでいる左方移動の制約を同じメカニズムで説明できる統語理論を目指して研究を進めた。そして、最大投射は障壁とし、これを越えるためには指定部か付加位置経由で抜け出さねばならず、右方移動で右側付加位置に残される中間痕跡が適正統率を欠くような空範疇原理を打ち立て、それを中心に、このメカニズムの理論的妥当性の補強と各種の島の制約などに対する説明力の増強を図った。勿論このメカニズムで右方移動のすべての性質を捉えられるわけではないが、その局所性は左方移動と同じ土俵で取り扱われ得ることを示すことができたと考える。今後の展開としては、説明できる統語現象の数を増大して、より説明力の高い枠組みへと進化させることが考えられる。また、右方移動の他の性質についてもこの枠組みで捉えられる余地がないか検討することも考えられる。
