Purpose of the study is to make clear the changing process of life style and concionsress of contemposaly rural Japan. Since later half of 1950s, life of rural Japanese changed fundamentally. These were rasions syteral causes of course, however intention and decision of people themselves were another important factors that oriented the direction of change. In the study, investigators made field researches at various types of settlements, such as farming, fishing, foresting and commerce ones. In spite of different characters and conditions of settlements, processes of change were rather common. That is, rate of highly educated people increased rapidly from later half of 1960s, and they left their original places to urban areas for jobs, and most of them didn't come back. De-population has become clear from the end of 1970s at every rural settlement and aging of population also proceeds. It is difficult to predict the future of these serial settlements, however it depend on the option of people who have left rural area.

本研究的目的在于弄清当代日本农村生活方式和观念的变化过程。自20世纪50年代后半期以来，日本农村的生活发生了根本性的变化。当然，这些都是制度性的原因，但人们自己的意图和决定是另一个重要因素，导向变化的方向。在本研究中，调查者对不同类型的聚落进行了实地调查，如农业、渔业、林业和商业聚落。尽管不同的特点和定居点的条件，变化的过程是相当普遍的。也就是说，从20世纪60年代后半期开始，受过高等教育的人口比例迅速上升，他们离开原来的地方到城市工作，大多数人没有回来。从20世纪70年代末开始，每个农村定居点的人口减少都很明显，人口老龄化也在继续。很难预测这些系列定居点的未来，但它取决于离开农村地区的人的选择。
