QUEST FOR NEW MATERIAL PHASES UNDER EXTREME CONDITIONS

The present research was carried out for the fiscal years 1996-1998. The purpose of the present research was to promote mutual interactions among the physicists who are working in various fields of physics under extreme conditions. The fields include condensed matter physics experiment, condensed matter physics theory, computational physics, astrophysics, and earth and planetary sciences.We have held Oji International Seminar "Quest for New Physical Phases under Extreme Conditions' at Hotel New Oji in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido, for the period May 31-June 5, 1998. The Seminar was sponsored jointly by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Fujihara Foundation of Science. More than 60 scientsis, including 1 8 scientists from overseas, participated in the Seminar. The Seminar was extremely successful. It placed a foundation for future collaborations between Japanese scientists and overseas scientists who are working in this fastly growing field.We sincerely wish we would be able to continue the research on the quest for new material phases under extreme conditions in the coming years with a new organization of the group and with a new form of financial aid.
