The researchers tried to settle the official evaluation methods for indoor air quality in storage for cultural objects because there is no limitation in Japan's law on air pollutants' concentration in museums that prevents them from damage. This research was divided into three parts against to environmental factors like physical, chemical, and biological deterioration : settlement of measuring method for evaluation, case study in museums, clarifying effect to the cultural objects. For preventing physical stress like alteration in shape. etc.. A tentative plan for measuring the spatial distribution of temperature and of relative humidity was settled referring to the officially fixed method for sanitation. Moisture content of each material against spatial relative humidity was measured but all measurements have yet been completed. For diminishing chemical alteration by pollutants Qualitative and quantitative measurements were done to know what pollutants really exist in museums. For newl … More y-built museums, five compounds were selected as indoor air pollutants along with nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and chloride compounds as outdoor air pollutants : ammonia, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, formic acid and acetic acid. Tentative plans are also settled to measure the concentration of each pollutant. Chemical effects of these pollutants to several materials were examined under condition of accelerating deterioration : high concentration, high humidity and high temperature. Under high concentration of formaldehyde/acetic acid with high moisture content, some pigments including lead/copper changed their color and chemical forms, Test method for estimating contamination from building material like plywood and woods were presented. For keening away from biological invasion Growth ability of spores suspended in air were tested against to fallen spores collected on the floor. The result showed it is the better way to measure dust concentration than to count the spores for evaluation of danger of fungi attack. Less
