Poor air quality can is the leading environmental risk to health. World Bank estimated that air pollutions cost the world $8.1 trillion in 2019\.The turning point in public recognition of air pollutions danger happened when Ella Kissi-Debrah death in February 2013 was ruled due to air pollutions. Philip Barlow, the inner south London coroner, said Ella's death was caused by acute respiratory failure, severe asthma and air pollution exposure. Ella is the first person in the UK to have air pollution listed as a cause of death. There is high chance her death was avoidable if she was not exposed unknowingly to pollutants.Polluted air is a particular risk for people suffering from Asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions. There are around 8M people in the UK who were diagnosed with asthma and around 12M of people with chronic respiratory conditions. Due to their vulnerability they need to manage their conditions to make sure they avoid exposure to poor air quality and reduce risk of exacerbations.During our project Natural Language Interpretation and Improvement Advice for Indoor Air Quality to Assist with Self-Management of Respiratory Conditions we will develop Voice User Interface (VUI) with Alexa Conversational AI (Artificial Intelligence) for environmental IoT which monitors both indoor and outdoor air quality. The objective is to help people with chronic respiratory conditions to stay safe and be aware of air quality around them, send them early warning and encourage to take precautions and actions when necessary.VUI and Conversational AI provides a huge advancement in our daily interaction with computers and other smart devices. Unlike menus, touchscreens, or mouse clicks, using our voices to have conversations is one of the most natural and effortless ways to communicate. There is no requirements to learn new skills to handle new smart device or new mobile application. This is especially beneficial for elderly who often have very basic digital skills.VUI makes interaction with application easier, faster and more entertaining. User can simply say, "Alexa, what is my air quality inside the house now?" "What can I do to improve it?" to receive voice replies with information and advice. It also makes easier to collect user feedback using their voice rather than asking them to fill screen forms. We plan to offer it to end users on a subscription basis, Air Quality as a Service (AQaaS) to lower entry barriers for technology adoption.
