For the past two years, we have been conducting field work, gathering research material, and microfilming the following materials for four regions : 29 reels of material mainly on villages and towns kept at the Okayama University Library and the Okayama Municipal Central Library ; 60 reels of material which deal with the relationship between bakuhu and han from the Yamaguchi Archives Library ; 29 reels of material dealing mainly with embassies from Korea kept at the Tottori Prefectural Museum ; and 6 reels of material on the lord of the Tsuyama han from the Tsuyama Local Museum. In addition, we researched and made copies of materials on Okayama han from the microfilm collection of the Okayama han archives. We went outside Okayama to other locations in order to look for any other historical sources on Oakayama han which may exist. Our intentwas to collect materials with which we could make comparative historical analysis.We formed four research groups in order to read and analyze the ab … More ove materials and to select important materials for print and distribution to libraries and scholars. We also held meetings to discuss our progress. Other scholars as well as the members of the research groups have analyzed and examined these materials. I would like to describe two results from the above research - first, the relationship between Okayama han authorities and han retainers as well as peasants and commoners ; second, Okayama han and the influence of East Asia on Okayama han.1.Fukaya concentrated his analysis on the period of Ikeda Mitsumasa. The politics of "meikun" (enlightened) Mitsumasa became an important part of Oakayama han politics in the latter part of the Edo period. The speech by Mitsumasa includes "iken" which is considered to have been a law, having "kyoyu" character. Through the analysis of this "iken", he examined how the lord and his retainers gave one another political recognition and how this recognition regulated and determined the real relationship between them.2.Kamiya examined receptions ordered by the shogun of the Korean and Okinawan embassies by Okayama han. Okayama han playd an important role as a "koku-shu" under the Bakuhu-han state regime, a role which can be seen in diplomatic receptions. While fulfillling its duty of receiving foreign embassies. Okayama han authorities reproduced and reinforced the han's self-perception as a "koku-shu". This self-perception regulated the relationship of Okayama han with the bakuhu and other hans.The following reports are based on the research results 1 and 2 and other topics we have been researched for the past two years. We have a plan to hold a symposium, with which a book of articles will be published. We have completed the cataloging materials which have been microfilmed in order to present the basic data collected up to now. We hope this catalog will be broadly used. Less
